outrageous charges
I am very unhappy about my invoice. I took my car in for an inspection and told them about a few problems that I knew were would fail me on: A check engine light and a weird grinding sound when I turned the wheel. I expected this to be a part of the inspection.

However, they charged me 297 for the inspection, emissions, oil change, $142 to diagnose the check engine light issue and the $47 to test drive my car to hear the noise I complained about! Most of this would have been discovered during a regular inspection. So I am out of $300 for this place doing nothing but an oil change and inspection.

We’re sorry that you were unsatisfied with your recent visit to our shop. We make every attempt possible to be upfront about our diagnostic charges to ensure that our customers understand what they are paying for. Keith emailed a copy of your invoice, complete with cost breakdowns, prior to our mechanic’s diagnosis. At that time you approved the work, including the diagnostic charges for the check engine light.

While many issues can and usually are discovered during the state inspection, you brought your vehicle in with complaints about sounds when turning. Noises will not cause the vehicle to fail the state inspection, and therefore we gave our mechanic enough time to drive the vehicle, physically inspect causes, and diagnose the issue as you requested.

Similarly a check engine light does not fall under the $25 charges for the emission test. The cost of a check engine light diagnosis gives the mechanic enough time to scan the vehicle, physically verify the cause, and recommend a solution. We inform every customer that we do charge for the diagnosis prior to the work being done.
