Jeff brought his son's 2004 Accord to us in December. His complaint was oil in the coolant. We replaced the head gasket, and also tested the head for cracks, which passed, surfaced the head, and tested the radiator, which failed, and was replaced. Replacing the head gasket (and head if damaged) is the only repair we have ever had to do to correct the complaint of oil in the coolant.
He called a few weeks later saying that the check engine light was on. There was a code for a camshaft actuator, which was probably set by being low on oil.
On Feb 12, Jeff brought it back low on oil, with oil in the coolant again. He also stated a radiator hose had blown and it had overheated again.
We did not feel the head gasket had failed and researched the issue. We found incidents of Honda Accords of this age, where replacing the head gasket did not correct the problem. The engine actually had a porous block and the only repair would be replacing the block or the engine. None of our mechanics have ever seen this problem, and all four of our technician have 30+ years experience. Hindsight is always better, but replacing the head gasket has always been the repair for oil in the water. All of the cases on the internet had had the head gasket replaced first.
We quoted him the cost of installing a used engine and transferring his timing components from his engine. We offered him a discount to help him with the cost.
We don't know what "fix" he had done for $1200, as he has not given us that information.
