Don, good afternoon, first we want to thank you for your review, but we would like to address your visit with us. When you came into our shop you were concerned because you were getting ready to travel to Colorado hauling a 5th-wheel. Upon dropping off the vehicle you had a check engine light on, and you had stated your truck was not using the DEF in the DEF tank.
We did pull the codes, and we did recommend starting with putting O.E. Fuel Filters on as the dealer stated as well. Here’s the difference though, when we went to replace the approved O.E. fuel filters our Tech noticed, we do have pictures which we showed you, of the fuel filter housing which had metal particles in both primary and secondary filters. We stopped once we found the metal and contacted you to inform you of our findings. At that time yes, we did give you an estimate to replace the High-Pressure fuel pump along with several other items. It is best practice to replace several components in the fuel system because the metal particles have contaminated your system.
When we talked, you had said you had the High-Pressure pump replaced in Colorado. We offered to call the dealer for you to check to see if it was still under warranty and you stated you’d call them. You did call us back later and told us the dealer said it was still under warranty. You requested we put it back together and save the metal particles we had found so you could take it back to the dealer for warranty repairs, we were happy to do so.
We did advise you, same as the dealer, to begin with to start with replacing the fuel filter with O.E. filters. Please understand though, more repairs were necessary because upon investigation we found metal particles in your fuel system. Just replacing the filters will not solve the problem of metal particles being present. Replacing the fuel filters is band-aiding your truck. The fuel filters are not what was causing the metal particles, and those metal particles are now contaminating your system which will cause more severe problems down the road. Our full recommended repairs were extensive yes, because again, the metal particles are now in your fuel system which can, as we have stated cause serious problems including injector failure etc..
We do wish you the best of luck going forward and safe travels to Colorado.
