OK Service, Sales slick and old school
I had to deal with Neil Isom? on spelling. I felt like they scammed me in every way possible. Paid top top dollar and they berated my trade in which they had on the lot 3 days later. Oh they washed and waxed it though. Pulled the olde 4 square, beat up the car, tell you about your horrible credit (I paid CASH) and how rare the car I wanted to buy was (A base, stripped Sonata). Commission breath big time. Sales manager did a great job of defending his salesman and made me feel even worse for asking simple questions about price. If there was a mountaintop in San Diego I would scream beware. Service dept is slow but no issues there. They seem to do an okay job

Horrible Service for Battery Recall
We had an appointment at 9:30 to have our battery replaced (or so we thought) on our 2019 Kona EV due to problems with the battery. We have been waiting over 6 months for this due to a problem Hydundai has identified with the lithium-ion battery. We arrived on time and were informed the battery would not be replaced at that time, as the first step is for them to put the car on a lift and take a picture of the battery which will be sent to Hyundai to validate a new battery is required. Once determined, the battery will arrive some 30 days later. First we had heard of this. However, the incredible part was our car was not taken care of until the very END of the day. It was not until 6:40 in the evening the car was completed. So unacceptable. We assume since it is a recall, Kearny Mesa Hyundai does not get paid as much for their technician time so we were very last in line. The car was there for over 10 hours. We had an appointment.

Poor support for Kona Electric Vehicle
I brought my 2020 Kona EV in for a software update for recall 199, "reduced braking power". I dropped the car off 07/15/2021 at 9 a.m. in the morning. Over 30 hours later the car was still in the shop. Finally got the car back the next day around 4 p.m. Unfortunately, Hyundai didn't invest in over the air update technology, which means owners of Hyundai EVs have to schedule maintenance appointments for software updates. Then after dropping the car off they have to wait for a technician to get around to it. Keep in mind the service center is also working on ICE cars as well so it might take a day, two, or three to get your EV back. Clearly, Hyundai management did not think about the total ecosystem required to support electric vehicles. It is very discouraging to have paid for an expensive EV while making Hyundai look good for selling a zero emission vehicle, only to be treated in such a poor manner. I totally regret buying this car. Please, don't make the same mistake. Before purchasing an EV, look at all of the other competitors, Tesla, GM, Ford, and so on.

Gillian M R., Parts and Service Director from Kearny Mesa Hyundai responded on 07/24/2021 08:33 AM

Hello Mr. Tenhunen, I understand your frustration with the fact that Hyundai does not have "over the air updates" and that you have to bring your car into a dealership to have this latest update performed. I am sure that Hyundai Motor America will review this feedback from you and that helps them with their process, however as your servicing dealer I want to make sure that your experience with our staff was to your satisfaction as truly this review is our rating as a service facility to ensure we are providing top level service by our staff to our customers. If there was something specific about your experience from our interation with you that you feel needs to be improved upon, please don't hesitate to reach out.
