If not for that clacking under the hood...
I love the Outback, and if not for the distracting noise of the unconventional Boxer engine sitting under the hood, I believe I'd be pinching myself over the purchase. Simply put, the 2015 Outback is a great car. Not only is it versatile, and robust, it is also (dare I say) luxurious. The interior is refined and the ride is a complete surprise. If not for the fact that I am a mechanic with way too much understanding of the workings of internal combustion engines, my only complaint would be about the sluggish entertainment/navigation system. But there is that unsettling sound of the little diesel-like boxer engine. I am trained to seek out unusual sounds in an engine and this engine has some unusual noises, especially during the first morning warmup. You see, noise often translates to friction. Friction is wear, and wear is bad. Now, I've been told that the noises I'm hearing are normal, AND I have a lifetime powertrain warranty, so I'm willing to stay calm. But then, didn't my cousin just tell me his Outback's engine was replaced with under 100,000 miles? Hmmmm....
