My 2017 Sonata
I look at my Sonata as "drivable luxury". This is a car that looks at home right alongside cars costing two or three times as much. In fact, our car so impressed a friend of mine who was shopping around for a Mercedes or BMW, that he was amazed--he didn't even know he was riding in a Hyundai. However good it looks, though, this is a car that likes to be driven. In "Sport" mode, acceleration is absolutely effortless; the smallest pressure on that gas and all of a sudden traffic just drops away as if you've shifted into overdrive. And speaking of "shifting"--that 6-speed transmission is just as smooth as silk. I actually wanted to be a little disappointed about that; my favorite car in recent decades was my 1996 Saturn SL2 5-speed stick. I drove it like a sports car for almost 200.000 miles. This Sonata goes just as fast, but does it smoother, quieter and with a more luxurious feel. It's civilized sportiness. We put cushy blankets in the back for our two little doggies and they think they're curling up on the couch as we head out on the interstate to visit out-of-state relatives. We visited my cousin's craft whiskey distillery north of Austin Texas in August--headed back just as the big rains hit the "Hill Country" and our Sonata was just as solid in the wet as she was in the dry weather. Living in L.A. (and being retired) means, that instead of driving for work, I now am the family taxi-driver; granddaughters starting high school--I'm there to drive them when their parents' work schedules suddenly change or somebody's car is in the shop. My wife is American Indian/Asian-Pacific Islander and we worked the Rennaisance Faire Ale Stands for decades, so now if there is a Pow Wow in Temecula, a "small faire" in Simi Valley, friends in Riverside or visiting Oldest Grandson at the Las Vegas casino where he's an assistant chef, our Sonata gets us there in smooth style. This is "affordable luxury" that looks just as great sitting in your driveway as it does under the neon lights in front of your favorite West Hollywood hot spot, but you just have to feel it on the open road to fully appreciate this amazing vehicle.
